MANILA – Artists belonging to several groups as well as art educators today reiterated a call for vigilance to protect artistic freedom and freedom of expression in the wake of the government’s decision to shut down a controversial art exhibit.

In a press conference at the UP College of Mass Communication auditorium, the artists and art educators said the closure of the exhibit bodes ill for freedom of expression in the Philippines.

Iggy Rodriguez, of the group Palayain ang Sining, announced that the artists involved in the “Kulo” exhibit will show the artworks one last time on Aug. 21, which was supposed to be the last day of the show at the CCP main gallery before it was closed down due to pressure from the public, mainly conservatives and the Catholic Church.
